Governor Proclaims "New Mexico Museum of Space History Day"

March 1st Now Annual Free Day For New Mexico Residents

(Alamogordo, New Mexico) — The New Mexico Museum of Space History will announce on March 1, 2013, at 12 p.m. that it has been chosen to become a Smithsonian Affiliate. A division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, the Museum of Space History is the first within the department to receive this honor.

The Museum will accept shipment of an Apollo Boilerplate Command Module, the first artifact to arrive as part of the Smithsonian Affiliations Program.

A proclamation from New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez will be read by NM Department of Cultural Affairs Deputy Director Michael S. Delello declaring each March 1st as New Mexico Museum of Space History Day, a free day for the citizens of New Mexico.

  • Being chosen as a Smithsonian Affiliate is a significant milestone for a museum and the New Mexico Museum of Space History is privileged to be among those chosen. Of the thousands of museums across the country, there are currently only 177 Smithsonian Affiliates representing 41 states, Puerto Rico and Panama.
  • Affiliate organizations are selected for their record of presenting high quality exhibitions, scholarship, professionalism, and museum educational programs.
  • The Apollo Boilerplate represents the first of many new artifacts and exhibits that the Museum will be able to present to its visitors because of its Smithsonian Affiliation.
  • The Governor's Proclamation honors not only the Museum, but the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and the people of New Mexico.
  • The public is invited to attend this event. Parking is available in the lower parking lot just below the museum.

Announcement and ceremony will be held on Friday March 1, 2013, at noon on the patio of the museum.
