Messengers from Space: Meteorites in Science and Lore

More rare than diamonds, platinum, or rubies, meteorites have long been venerated and feared by people around the world. Not until two hundred years ago however, did scientists begin to study these messengers from space, debris from Mars, the Moon, asteroids, and maybe even comets!

Before meteorites became part of science and astronomy they were a part of folklore & legend. Known as Heavenly Iron, Fire Dragons, and Shooting Stars, just to name a few, meteorites rained down from the skies on ancient peoples and became religious artifacts, dreaded oracles, and useful tools.

Meteorites are our messengers from space, and contain clues to the origins of our universe. This exhibit helps you discover the beauty and mystery of meteorites, and illuminates many of the myths that surround them.
