New: Camp confirmation packages
Living on Mars, the hunt for alien life, and death rocks from space take center stage during New Mexico Space Academy's 2013 summer session in Alamogordo. We offer four themes this year and opportunities for two weeks of overnight camps. Visit us on Facebook to see some of the new activities (work in progress!) we are developing. Camp experiences are: Homesteading Mars has you design and build a habitat on the Red Planet. It's not as simple as it seems. Real estate agents will tell you "Location, location, location." That means finding water. Next, how do keep yourself in food and oxygen in a remote, hostile environment? Equator or poles? Solar power or nuclear? Make the decisions that decide the fate of New Jamestown. Goldilocks Star hunts for stars that might support life on other worlds. Start right here with the one star that we know supports life, our Sun. It still holds mysteries we need to unravel as we look at other stars. Find out about twin Earths, Super Earths, and even Eyeball Earth. Launch a replica of the first spaceborne solar telescope, then build a working model of a solar satellite. Alien Hunters continues the quest for extraterrestrial life with a hunt starting here on Earth. Where do we find life and how do we detect it? If you want bug-eyed monsters, we've got them here. Next, learn how to communicate (and how pulsars were almost mistaken for Little Green Men). Wrap up the week dissecting an alien body found on space mission. Rex Rocket! explores what happened to the dinosaurs 65 million years ago and how it might happen again (notice the near-miss we had on Feb. 15?). Learn the anatomy and lives of dinosaurs and their friends — not everything back then was a dino — including the disaster that buried hundreds of Coelophysis so they could become the state fossil. Make your own deep impact with an asteroid catapult and tsunami simulator to see the risks that we still face. Design a mission to stop an asteroid headed for Earth.
